July 2008

Hello from Green Lake Wisconsin!

7/30/2008

Summer seems to be slipping away so fast.  I cannot believe only one more month before schools start up once again.  For me the slipping away of summer is the Green Lake Festival of Music's 29th season ending on July 27 with a Choral Final Double feature, which began with Hudson Shad, renowned male choral ensemble and ended with "A World of Music"; choir, orchestra and soloists conducted by Sephen Alltop.

Below are a couple things that I thought were impressive and just had to share them with you...

Best Wisconsin Towns (Source: Wonders of Wisconsin)
Best Family Weekend  - 1. Wisconsin Dells  2. Green Lake
Best Dining - 1. (tie) Lake Generva & Sister Bay  2. Green Lake
Most Scenic Beauty - 1. Bayfield  2. Alma  3. Green Lake

Gov. Jim Doyle and the Wisconsin Department of Tourism recognized the need and made funds available to aid recovery in disaster areas.  The Green Lake Area Chamber's very unique event of "August is Art Month" qualified to apply for the grant and was grateful for the full grant approval.  The "August is Art Month" will now be promoted to a much larger regional area in order to help get the message out: "WISCONSIN IS OPEN"!

Featured this month: Wireless in Green Lake

Two Chez, the Goose Blind, Adam's Rib, Caestecker Public Library and the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce (pictured is what you may be able to look at while working on your laptop by the Chamber Office) all offer free wireless internet to their patrons.  With internet becoming more an essential for everyday, downtown Green Lake is prepared to have everyone enjoy themselves and also keep up on business and such.

Concerts in the Park--Starlite Stage Series, ends August 13

August 6-Copper Box
Copper Box performs music that crosses boundaries as effortlessly as a supersonic jet.  The talented group draws inspiration from rock, polka, blues and Zydeco, resulting in a fusion of sound that captivates listeners and creates a musical melting pot of American rhythms.

August 13-Switchback
Original Americana, traditional Celtic, plus a few nods to genres off the beaten path delivered by two excellent musicians who create a full-band sound. Superb songwriting and harmonies reflect an uncommon grasp on the roots of American music, taking the traditional into the present.

Concerts are free thanks to the generous donations from area businesses. Concessions (popcorn, cookies, soda and water) are available during the concert. Commemorative concert buttons are also available for $10, which gives the button wearer the opportunity to win an item from the performing band. Bring your picnic (no time to pack one-there are many local restaurants that offer take out), chair, blanket and enjoy great music with a wonderful lakeview.

4th OF JULY on July 4, 2008

Green Lake Area Chamber's 4th of July Celebration, Friday, July 4th was a hit with all the fun family things to do and the beautiful fireworks that were seen, like the one shown here.  The Green Lake Chamber Arts Network will be continuing the "Fire in the Sky 2008" theme into August Art Month in Green Lake.  I have also placed a photo of the lead boat from the 1st Annual Boat Parade, which according to the photo the boat owners had a lot of fun doing.

August Art Month-August 1-31, 2008

Green Lake has a calendar full of Art in August such as live music & entertainment, sailing in the regatta, biking in the Friendship Bicycle Tour, Fine Art Show, Style Show, Art Walk, Chalk Art Festival, Dance & Culture, BBQing, and more.  Check out the calendar of events on our website.  There is also the Art Banners that will be displayed on the lightpoles in downtown Green Lake for the full month of August to be auctioned off on August 31st.  Pictured is one of last year's banners.  This year you can be a judge by placing your ballot at the Caestecker Public Library or the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce for a "People's Choice Award".

Golden Days Harvest Festival, September 27 & 28, 2008

20 years ago a few people got together and started Golden Days Harvest Festival.  Today, this event has grown into Green Lake's biggest event with food faire, farm markets, craft fair, parade, live entertainment, street dance, clowns, contests, face painting, beverages, games, petting zoo, rides, raffle, breakfast on Sunday, classic car show, auction, book sale, and more.  The posters and brochures will be available soon.  Start now to get that float made for the parade, scarecrow (2nd place winners pictured) and/or pie baked to win the contest prizes.  No matter what you will have a great time at Green Lake's 20th Annual Golden Days Harvest Festival, Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28.
